Green split peas is green gram that has been split but not skinned. Since the husk is not removed completely, the green colour is retained. It has added advantage of cooking quickly. It can be pressure cooked along with chopped onions, tomatoes, chillies and ginger garlic paste, and then tempered with jeera and ghee. Cooked moong dal along with jaggery and milk is used to make cardamom tinged kheer called payasam. Health benefits: Moong dal is rich in protein, folate, Vitamin B9, Vitamin A, Zinc, dietary fibre, antioxidant and magnesium. It is an easily digestible dal, suitable for children, elderly and for those recovering from illness.
